Vacationing in Lake Tahoe with Kids

There are many good reasons why you’ve booked your Truckee-Tahoe summer getaway — the crisp alpine air alone is enough to entice any visitor. There are the Tahoe usuals: waterskiing over Lake Tahoe on a glassy morning as the sun rises over the Eastern Sierras, or hiking up Eagle Falls with stunning vistas of Emerald Bay, or strolling through the wildflowers at Paige Meadows — the list goes on and on.

When it comes to trip planning for families or groups with travelers of various age levels, we’ve got you covered with our top three things to do in Lake Tahoe with kids and families while you’re here this summer.

Tahoe things to do with kids - Dad and Son

Spend a Day at Kings Beach

Kings Beach is North Lake Tahoe’s ultimate family summer spot to pull up out the beach chairs and sand buckets. Kings Beach offers something for everyone. At this state recreation area, children can run and play along the flat shoreline, rent kayaks, jetskis, or sign up for a parasailing session! Grab a smoothie at Java Hut, a long time beachside coffee joint, or lunch at Steamers Bar & Grill, with a view of the water. We recommend you order one of their tasty pizzas.

Tahoe things to do with kids - Bike path

Bike the Tahoe Trailways

Covering almost 19 miles from Truckee to the north and west shore of Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Trailways bike path has an easy grade the whole family will enjoy. Traveling along the Truckee riverbed on Highway 89 (with an opportunity to ride into Squaw Valley along Squaw Valley Road), bikers can leisurely pedal into Tahoe City or down the west shore of Lake Tahoe. Offering beautiful scenic views of Truckee and Lake Tahoe, it’s the perfect way to meander into town for a lakeside lunch, ice cream, or a refreshing libation on the Sunnyside deck (be prepared for a wait in the height of summer — but it’s worth it!).

Tahoe things to do with kids - Aerial Tram

Spend a Day at 8,200 feet — High Camp Paradise

You can’t come to Tahoe and not experience Squaw Valley’s world-famous High Camp. Ride the Aerial Tram up 2,000 feet from the Village at Squaw to High Camp, where you can take the whole family roller-skating, play a game of disc golf, enjoy a drink poolside, or take a dip in the hot tub. You could also opt for a scenic stroll to enjoy the wildflowers in bloom, or more challenging hike through Shirley Canyon and Emigrant Peak.
