If you've spent time in the Lake Tahoe area in the winter, you've probably heard the term "ski lease" buzzing around. So, what is a ski lease? (Hint: It's not renting a pair of skis.)

A ski lease is a half-year exclusive rental agreement for a private home or condo. Most of our North Lake Tahoe ski leases begin in December / January and end in April (approximately during the operating months of area ski resorts). The rental homes are located near Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar and Homewood. If you ski or snowboard in the Lake Tahoe area frequently — maybe you are a season passholder or are purchasing an Ikon or Mountain Collective Pass — a ski lease makes sense financially and logistically.

There's no check-in / check-out hassles with a ski lease. Once the lease starts, the house or condo is yours for four or five months. Come for just a night, or extend your stay by a week to enjoy a surprise snow storm — just as if it were your own home.

As a ski lease home or condo belongs solely to your family or group, there's no need to lug your skis, boots, poles, snowboards, helmets, goggles, extra layers (the list goes on) back and forth. You can leave all the gear in your ski lease. That means no more wet skis in the car or frozen ski racks.

Holiday weeks in Lake Tahoe are extremely popular and one of the best times to escape to the mountains. However, that also means that nightly rates on vacation rentals and hotels are more expensive around certain weeks of the year (like New Years, Presidents Day, Easter and Spring Break). With a ski lease, you pay a flat monthly rate, so you will never be stuck at home due to pricey accommodations.
